Alice Primrose
Edward (maybe paired with Hyacinthine?)
That's all I've got atm.
(I'm not making these private posts only because they involve names and not just gameplay musings.)
I think these are the names I'll go with for the dwarves in my origins playthroughs:
Dwarven noble: Berit, to go with brothers Trian and Bhelen; last name Aeducan
Dwarven commoner: Runa, to go with sister Rica; last name Brosca
I feel like Scandinavian names are the best way to go with regards to the dwarves.
Actually, while I'm here, I might as well compare the preset names for all of the origins to the names I intend to give them. I'll list the male names, too, because why not?
Origin: Preset female name, preset male name followed by surname (my name, gender [but always female for me])
Human Noble: Elissa, Aedan Cousland (Idony, but note that I have completed this origin already with a character named Minerva, and at least started ones with characters named Lucasta and Gwen)
Human Mage: Solona, Daylen Amell (I've actually already played this origin and just used the default name, so because I already have the achievement I'm not sure I'll go back and replay it; therefore, Solona is basically this character's name in my head canon)
Elf Mage: Neria, Alim Surana (Related to the above, you don't get a unique achievement for an elf mage, so I won't play this origin and the character's name will remain Neria [or Alim, since in that case gender doesn't really matter])
City Elf: Kallian, Darrian Tabris (Hylia? I think I'll pick a different name because I'd like for it to be distinct from the Dalish elf's name, but if I end up permanently playing the City Elf then her name could be Hylia and the other elf's name would be different)
Dalish Elf: Lyna, Theron Mahariel (Hylia, but see above)
Dwarf Noble: Sereda, Duran Aeducan (Berit)
Dwarf Commoner: Natia, Faren Brosca (Runa)
Although now I'm wondering why I don't just leave the preset names for the characters I intend to play only for the origin achievements.
I was just looking at Beatrice Lundy and realized that it kind of looks like Bundy
Like Ted
ew no
But Lundy is SOGOOD, it needs to be used still.
Maybe I'll change my own name to Lundy LOL
Ummmmm so on the DA front I have pretty much decided that my "canon" Hawke is gonna be a dude, for a number of gameplay/story reasons. I'm thinking either Milo or Miles for him. Leaning VERY slightly towards Milo because it's Germanic and also really boyish and my Hawke is gonna be so immature it hurts
For DA:O, I might actually make my next canon character an elf. I haven't completely decided on that yet, again for gameplay/story/aesthetic reasons. For an elf (espesh a Dalish elf) I was thinking Hylia? Obvious Zelda reference is Obvious, but it fits stylistically (even if it isn't Welsh, but really now it kind of DOES sound about as Welsh as Cambria, I don't care if that's actually Latin it jives with other Dalish names okay) and it's awesome because it's a Zelda reference. The default name is Lyna, FWIW, which itself seems like an adaptation of a Welsh name. I might still name her Hylia if I decide to go the City Elf route, too, but I'm not completely sure.
If I do decide to stick with the human noble origin, I'll use Idony.
Haven't thought much of the dwarves, but honestly I'm not sure I'm big on playing them for canon characters. I do intend to at least complete their origin stories, though, so I should probably come up with something. But I haven't pinpointed what kind of names would need to be used.
If I decide to eventually do a female Hawke playthrough as well, I think her name will for sure be Alison.
(The thing is, the only reason I'd do different genders is because of the love interests, lulz forever. For a female Hawke, it'd probs be all about Sebastian and his Scottish accent.)
I'm trying to decide what my character on my next Dragon Age: Origins run-through should be named. So I made a poll!
http://www.behindthename.com/polls/1865
Pros of Cliona
+Actually Irish, as I wanted (actually preferred something Scottish but Irish is close enough)
+Not too French (or French at all)! I feel like the daughter of a man who fought against the Orlesian occupation should not give his children names that are particularly French, but there are a lot of English names that have French/Norman/Breton/whatever origins and that is just TOO MUCH FRENCH FOR ME. Not that they're xenophobes, and hell the mom's name is Eleanor, but still. For Ferelden!
+It goes well with Fergus (my character's brother's name)
+Alliteration (Cliona Cousland)
+It's badass.
Cons of Cliona
-It's maybe too badass, because I envision my character being something of a wallflower. I mean, sure, badassery is compulsory when you're a Grey Warden, but she's supposed to be a bit delicate even after she's proven herself to be a powerhouse. (Badass isn't really the right word, then... It's more like, I envision someone rather harsh with the name Cliona, whereas my character, as awesome as she is, is a bit softer. Paragon rather than Renegade, if you will.)
-Not prissy enough for a noblewoman. The default name for the female noble human origin is Elissa, I'm looking for something more like that.
Pros of Idony
+It's much more like Elissa in that it's girlish and frilly enough for the character; I can see her parents naming her Idony more so than I can Cliona.
+I can imagine Alistair saying her name and that's ~really important omg ilu Alistair <3
+Just overall a better fit
+It seems like the sort of name you'd find in the setting (though Cliona does too)
+I can accept that it's more Old Norse/Germanic
+It's like the right length and everything, other names were too short
+It's a bit less generic than Cliona and far less generic than Gwen, another name I considered
Cons of Idony
-Not Scottish or Irish, but if it's a medieval English form of a Norse/Germanic name I think that's acceptable
-I probably prefer Cliona over Idony on a personal level
-Doesn't match as well with Fergus, though it's not completely weird (and maybe the fact that they're not perfect matches makes it more realistic)
Right now Idony's winning in the poll, and I feel like I agree. I also considered the names Iona and Isolde/variants of Isolde, but they're both used in the game for rather important characters. (Iona is less important, but she's really prominent in the human noble origin story. And Isolde is part of a main quest line, so... No, that would bug me.) Actually I considered others as well, here's the list:
Isla (too short)
Oona/Una (too short and just not pretty enough, though I really like this name)
Eloise/Helewis (Eloise seems too French, Helewis seems too... ugly)
Clare (boring)
Gwenllian (ehhh not that much more inspired than Gwen)
Malle (cute but just not enough substance to it)
Undine/Ondine (too Latin)
Adela (almost too German but not really, I think it's just too common and almost modern)
Katarin (doesn't fit, also I'm wary of using variants of my own name for characters)
Nolwenn (see Gwenllian)
I might consider Adela for my Dragon Age II female Hawke, though, since that character necessitates a more accessible name. I'm leaning more towards Alison, though, I feel like that really fits with siblings Bethany and Carver. There are a couple of Alisons/Allisons in the first game but they're very minor characters... although now that I think of it one of them DID live in the same town that Hawke comes from, hmmmmmm. I'm also considering making my main Hawke a MAN but I'm not sure about that. In that case, haven't found a name I really like yet.
Also, I think I might create a new 'canon' character for Mass Effect, but just have her be basically the same (maybe change makeup and hairstyle lmao) and instead give her the name Cassandra which SO FITS my Shepard, more than Gabriella does. Though Gabriella's fine too. Mostly it's just that there's a Gabriella 'Gabby' introduced as part of your crew in the second game and it bugs me a bit; granted, though, Mass Effect tends to reuse names a lot (I think there are, like, 4 Jacobs in the entire series), so it's not such a big deal. But I REALLY LIKE CASSANDRA, so. Yeah.
Wow this is the nerdiest post I've ever made.
Crap, what am I gonna name the dog?!?!?!?!
ETA: Oh that's right, I named the dog Taranis in my most recent playthrough. I still like that one.
ETA2: More male!Hawke... Miles? I really like that, actually.
Megan challenged me a few years back to name my 12 children. I've redone the list:
1. Zelda Lenore
2. Lydia Temperance
3. Frances Odette (twin to Lydia)
4. Maud Iris
5. Rose Victoria
6. Albert Lawrence
7. Catherine Hermione
8. Thomas Jerome
9. Cassandra Fay
10. Arthur Leon
11. David Zebulon
12. John St. John
Other names considered: Beatrice Lily, Veronica Mercy, Edmund Philip, Robin Geoffrey, Richard Orlando, Miles Horatio, Zora Bernadette.
I think I'm going to cross-post this to BtN to see what others think.
Stumbled across this while reading Paradise Lost, as an adjective to describe... I think it's Adam's hair. I like it as a name, I think — it is making me think Hyacinth is nice, too, but I really like the -ine ending in addition to the adjectival nature of it. (I do love adjectives.)
Problem is, I'm not sure which gender I prefer it for. The origin of the Hyacinthus myth plus the fact that the adjective itself was describing Adam makes me think boy, but the existence of Jacinth/Jacinta plus what I consider the very girly (in a good way) -ine ending makes me also like it for a girl. The whole flower thing... I really do like it when flower names are given to boys (I still haven't given up on Ivy!), but ughhhhh I like girly flowers whyyyyy am I such a stereotype?!?!?!?!
Anyway. Something to consider.
I want twins named Zelda and Zora
Need MN for Zora though. Will brainstorm later when I have the chance.
How do I not love this more? Mordecai is so awesome.
I've mentioned this a lot before, but my dad used to work with a guy named Mordecai. He was a good-looking black guy (with glasses, I think?) and I just thought he seemed really neat (I used to hang out at my dad's store a lot, and I remember him being nice to me). And he worked in the meat department, I think, unless my memory's slipping. How cool is Mordecai the Benevolent Butcher?!?!?!
I think Frances Odette is a gem of a name. I want to prance with her across the castle grounds in the moonlight. Lol how silly. ♥

How does Luther Lawrence sound? Or Lawrence Luther? I do love alliteration.
Maybe I'm liking Lawrence Luther more atm. I do miss Kansas so much.
I realize I'm posting this in my LJ, where all of two people will read it, but it's perhaps not so relevant that it needs to be posted elsewhere.
After perusing the SSA list of all names used that logged five or more babies born with that name, Ladasha did show up in 2006, with 11 girls named Ladasha. As far as I can tell, though, that was the last time Ladasha logged five or more. And La-a is nowhere in sight; neither is Laa (without the dash; I can't tell, but it sort of looks like maybe dashes aren't registering in the document?).
And given how many times that stupid urban legend has been circulated, or how many times someone new has claimed of knowing of a La-a, you'd think there'd be more than 5.
(/like I even need to say it)
ETA: Also, after realizing it seems like the original urban legend has Le-a, not La-a, listed, I'm not getting any hits on Le-a or Ledasha.
